In celebration of National Children’s Mental Health Day, “Me and My Shadow Family Fun Day” was held last May at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. This was a community-wide event for caregivers, care providers, family and community members working with or parenting children 0-5 years old. Activities were designed to assist adults in strengthening bonds with children through mirroring, modeling, exploration and play, using items that can easily be found and experiences that can easily be repeated. Simultaneously, adults benefitted from opportunities to engage in relaxation and mindfulness exercises, be guided in partnering with their children to create art together, and hear from experts providing Early Childhood Mental Health and Early Care and Education services.
“Me & My Shadow Family Fun Day” was co-hosted by Project ABC – About Building Connections for Young Children and their Families, and organized with the collaboration of the Los Angeles County Departments of Mental Health, and Children and Family Services, Children’s Institute, Inc., For the Child, Pacific Asian Counseling Services, Ties for Families, The Long Beach Early Childhood Education Committee, and the University of Southern California. Event partners also included First 5 LA and Best Start LA, Long Beach Early Literacy, Long Beach Unified School District Head Start, Long Beach Councilmember Dee Andrews, ChildNet, South Bay Center for Counseling and many other organizations and individual community members committed to improving access to resources and the overall well-being and health of young children.
Save the Date! Next year’s Family Fun Day is scheduled for May 10, 2014 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. Check back for further details!
