Each year since 2005, four Kindergarten Festivals are held in partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District. The festivals are an integral component of a comprehensive outreach program that links families to vital resources and supportive social services. Kindergarten teachers lead parent workshops in early literacy and math to help parents understand what to expect for their children, as well as provide a general overview on school readiness so that parents can create a learning environment at home. Information regarding transitional kindergarten is provided. School registration, uniform requirements and public health information and resources are available, including dental screenings that meet the state’s requirement for children entering Kindergarten as well as immunizations. Community resources such as the Long Beach Public Library, before and after school child care, asthma assistance, etc. are also highlighted. This year, more than 650 families representing 1,997 individuals (including children) attended the Kindergarten Festivals. Parent-child interactive activities were available along with the informational workshops. Every child entering kindergarten received a backpack full of books and school supplies while their siblings all received an age-appropriate book as well.
